AUTMHQ UPDATES
Hola and Hello!
Austin Urban Technology Movement (AUTMHQ), celebrates Thanksgiving week by recognizing and thanking everyone who is dedicated to assisting us in achieving our mission. We are grateful for what AUTMHQ has become and where it is headed thanks to people like you. ??Click on Michael's image to watch the video message. Everyone at AUTMHQ has been affected by the lack of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry, and raising our voices is only the first step for us; we are taking action and paving the way for future generations of the Black and Hispanic communities to enter the tech world with ease, allowing them to thrive and feel fulfilled. It is thanks to your donations, that we are able to offer wrap-around services to our program participants to ensure their success. We are dedicated to establishing stronger relationships with major technology companies to bring job opportunities to our job board. And anyone can get involved in our mission in a number of ways! We promise that doing so will make your days extraordinary. ?? ?? As a reminder of how grateful we are to have you in our community, we wish you and your families an unforgettable Thanksgiving filled with joy and love that will last all year. ?? Gracias and Thank you! ?? Paty Sesma VP of MarCom at AUTMHQ

Why we need a diverse teaching force
In school, girls routinely outperform guys. Several reasons might account for this, but research has shown that students do better when they have a teacher who is of the same race or gender as them. Of course, educators of various colors and genders exist, but data show that white women make up the majority of instructors. This means that students who are similar to their teachers are more likely to succeed academically and are even more inclined to seek professions in teaching, and the cycle continues. Attendance, academic achievement and disruptive behaviors have all been shown in studies to be related to the demographic match between learners and instructors. This article discusses some of the reasons why students must have a diverse teaching staff.

Flavilla Fongang, most influential woman in UK tech 2022, winner's speech
In this video from Computer Weekly’s annual diversity event, in partnership with Nash Squared, Flavilla Fongang, founder of 3 Colours Rule and GTA Black Women in Tech, gives her acceptance speech as the 2022 Most Influential Woman in UK Tech. She talks about her journey into the technology sector and how she advocates for other women and black women in the tech space. When she first met Russ Shaw, founder of Global Tech Advocates (GTA), she noticed she was one of the only black women in the room, so she took it upon herself to address this issue.
"We only believe in what we see," she says, explaining why she not only strives to increase the number of black women in the tech sector, but also why she created a book, The Voices in the Shadows, to give young people the opportunity to see more people like themselves in the technology industry.

How brands can do better on diversity and inclusion
Tain Joliffe, Diversity Lead at RAPP Worldwide shares her thoughts on how marketers can be authentic when it comes to diversity and inclusion
[...] So, how can brands do better on DE&I? RAPP has identified five key rules to help close the Brand Inclusion Gap:
1. Respect Understanding customer expectations; when, how, and why they can fluctuate, but also acknowledging the ‘intersectionality’ of issues people are navigating in their lives. 2. Radical Transparency Being transparent about process and provenance and being clear with your language. 3. Responsibility Establishing a clear purpose that runs through all brand actions. Delivering on the customer experience and making a concerted effort to engage every single employee in a DE&I culture. 4. Resourcefulness Making it your duty to do no harm and work smart. 5. Reliability Keeping your promises – even the smallest ones – to your colleagues, customers, and stakeholders.
