We're Getting Closer to Closing the Digital Divide and Making High-Speed Internet Available to All
By: Ananya Rajanala
As of June 2022, 2.8 million Texas Households and 7 million people lack broadband access. 23% of Texans, which is 6 million people, are experiencing the digital divide (the gap between those with broadband access and those without). This problem largely affects rural communities, communities of color, and low-income families. The Texas Technology for All petition, which aims to close the gap and provide high-speed internet access and reliable devices for low-income Texans, is currently at around 2,300 signatures (200 signatures away from our end goal). Although our petition’s target has almost been met, the signatures are increasing at an evidently slow pace.

Big Opportunity! Hiring Initiative for Reentry Empowerment by Building Promise USA (BPUSA)
As the coordinating agency for reentry supportive services for the City of Austin, Building Promise USA (BPUSA) is implementing a reentry supportive service model that uses the collective resources and knowledge of the reentry continuum of care that exists in Austin. The Hiring Initiative for Reentry Empowerment (HIRE) has been designed to facilitate broad-based collaborations among reentry service providers, employers, and formerly incarcerated individuals seeking gainful employment. According to the US Department of Justice, over 650,000 incarcerated Americans return to their communities each year, but two-thirds are rearrested within three years. For individuals being released, the realities of re-entry back into society can be daunting because many lack the necessary support to make this transition. Historically, this population struggles to find, secure, and retain a job due to stigma, harmful policies, and disconnection from personal networks. Mira la Información es Espa?ol aquí ??

Juliette Bautista Founded Club Ability to Empower Low-Income Families and Encourage Diversity in the Tech Industry
In 2018, Juliette Bautista moved from her home country of Peru to Utah for her daughter’s medical treatments. In Peru, Bautista had worked in the tech industry in Peru for 15 years and was named one of the up-and-coming young executives with the most promise in Peru’s corporate ecosystem. When she moved to Utah, she noticed a need for coding classes for children, focused on low-income families, minorities, and children with disabilities. She founded Club Ability to fill those needs and became a 2021 Women Tech Awardee and a 2021 Utah Living Color Honoree for her efforts.
In 2017, only 405 high school students in Utah took the AP Computer Science exam, yet there were 4,000 open computer science jobs, as mentioned by Aaron Skonnard, Co-Founder and CEO of Pluralsight in the 2018 Silicon Slopes Tech Summit.

Spanish Language Coalition thanks the FTC for initiative to protect Latinx online
The Spanish Language Disinformation Coalition (SLDC), comprised of civil rights, Latinx leadership, and consumer advocacy organizations, sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), thanking the agency for its plans to initiate a new rulemaking to protect Latinx consumers and prevent unfair and deceptive practices by online platforms.
The SLDC commended the FTC for moving forward with its initiative to “curb lax security practices, limit privacy abuses, and ensure that algorithmic decision-making does not result in unlawful discrimination,” as the proposed rulemaking reads.
The SLDC developed its principles following the Change the Terms model for guiding platforms on how to enforce their own policies to prevent the spread of disinformation and hateful activities.
