AUTMHQ exists to place more Blacks and Hispanics in tech.
AUTMHQ MESSAGE Some thoughts to share with you: A supermarket in Buffalo, NY in 2022; a Walmart in El Paso, TX in 2019; a church in Charleston, SC in 2015. The United States has a long history of race-based tragedies, but those recent shootings have stood out. The words used by the shooters have stood out – Blacks, Mexicans, Hispanics – connected with the hatred that has fueled the carnage.
Austin Urban Technology Movement (AUTMHQ) was incorporated in Texas as a nonprofit the same month a killer walked into Walmart in El Paso bemoaning the presence of Hispanics and seeking to shoot “Mexicans.” AUTMHQ originally was founded and operated as Blacks in Tech in 2016, months after Black worshipers in Charleston were murdered in church. AUTMHQ exists to place more Blacks and Hispanics in the tech industry thereby increasing their income and influence in all walks of life. So, while a gamer is harnessing technology to live stream the killing of Black people in Buffalo as if life itself were a video game, AUTMHQ and everything it stands for is in the crosshairs. Please join our movement and help us counter the detailed planning that has gone into the destruction of our communities. Clifford Dukes Chief Operating Officer at AUTMHQ

Women of Color Redefining Power in Corporate America
The share of women of color in the modern workforce is one of the fastest-growing demographics in our country, and their accelerated rise challenges some of society’s most deep-seated stereotypes for what power looks like in corporate America. But even when they are able to advance through the ranks of corporate America, they still face significant barriers to their success — and unlike their white men counterparts, women of color are more likely to feel they need to hide or change themselves in order to “fit” into the workplaces they lead. Join Deepa Purushothaman, the first woman of color partner at Deloitte and the author of THE FIRST, THE FEW, THE ONLY: How Women of Color Can Redefine Power in Corporate America, and Vernā Myers, VP of Inclusion Strategy at Netflix, for an in-person panel discussion moderated by NationSwell’s president, Uyen Tieu. Allies and attendees will be encouraged to join the conversation, and together we will cover how women of color have historically faced setbacks as they try to succeed in and reshape American workplaces & institutions and the role each of us has to play in creating an inclusive future. NationSwell Mainstage events are open to Council members, Institutional Members, and guests.

There is a growing body of research that supports this concept—that diversity is key to building the most efficient and successful teams. One study by Gartner revealed that a highly diverse environment can improve team performance by up to 30%. Diversity can also lead to better decision-making and higher profitability. In fact, according to McKinsey & Company, the most diverse companies outperform their less diverse peers by 36% in profitability. Diverse and inclusive team members don’t just bring a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences to the table, they also bring new approaches to problem-solving and greater levels of engagement. Here are three ways organizations can create a more inclusive work environment and enable their teams to perform better.
